Japan: Typhoon Muifa approaches Okinawa
Muifa is approaching the Japanese island of Okinawa and is forecast to make landfall on Friday, August 5th.
On Tuesday, August 2nd, Typhoon Muifa, the ninth-named storm of the season, continues its path toward Japan. Last week, Typhoon Muifa severely affected northern Philippines (5 deaths). Muifa is now approaching the Japanese island of Okinawa and is forecast to make landfall there on Friday, August 5th, bringing heavy downpours and strong winds to Okinawa prefecture and Amami islands (Kagoshima prefecture). Power outage as well as traffic disruptions, including flights delays and cancellations, are expected in affected areas. Depending on its path, the typhoon could also affect Taiwan and the Korean Peninsula.
Typhoon Muifa formed on July, 25th and brought severe flooding to the Philippines, already affected by Tropical Strom Nock-ten. Tropical storms and hurricanes are usual in the region, especially from May to November. A tropical storm has maximum sustained winds between 39 miles per hour (63 km/h) and 73 miles per hour (117 km/h), while a hurricane is a system with sustained winds of at least 74 miles per hour (119 km/h). Usually, hurricanes are classified depending on their wind intensity at an indicated time under the Saffir-Simpson scale, which ranks from 1 to 5. The Saffir-Simpson scale also provides examples of the type of damage that could be sustained by facilities depending on the strength of the wind.
